Written in 1888, the Symphony is focused on the struggle of man and fate, fight for happiness. The gloom "theme of fate," which opens the Symphony, appears in all the movements and is transformed in the Finale.
The lyrical slow movement (Andante cantabile) with a melodic tune by Valetta occupies a special place in the cycle.
