The great work of Charles Gounod Faust (1859) is the first classic example of the "French lyric opera" genre. The first part of J. W. Goethe's immortal tragedy served as the literary basis of the libretto written by M. Carre and J. Barbier.
The opera, which enjoyed success during the composer's lifetime, up to this day is considered to be one of the most frequently performed stage compositions.
The text is published in Russian and French.
