The name of Valentina Levko, an outstanding Russian contralto and People's Artist of Russia, is interna-tionally renown. Her concert performances are one of the most brilliant phenomena in the history of Russian vocal mastery. Opening the singer's recital at the Central House of Actors in Moscow, Boris Pokrovsky, the Artistic Di-rector of the Bolshoi Theatre, said: "Each of her performances of any vocal chamber piece is a completed life-story with a definite character, definite sensations, feelings and events. And there, I think, Levko is unique. The point is that her performance of even a small passage of any composition creates unusual sensations, be it a romance, a song or a small fragment of some piece of music. And all that is done with a great feeling of style".
The voice of Valentina Levko "is not one that can be attributed easily to some sort of strict categorization: it embraces the simultaneous possibilities of a contralto and a mezzo-soprano. It is not only an operatic voice, at any rate not the voice of weighty Russian caliber, because the singer is able to rein it in to express tender, intimate nuances. And at these moments she is transformed into a true chamber singer with a light, fluid presentation of voice" (Der Tagesspiegel, Germany, 1979).
This collection comprises some of the real gems of the singer's opera and concert repertoire. Some of them were arranged by the singer's lifelong partner and accompanist G. Zinger. The cavatina of Arsace ("Semiramida" by Rossini), the ballad of Orsini ("Lucretia Borgia" by Donizetti) and L. Arditi's valse "A Kiss" are published in their concert versions just as they were performed by Valentina Levko.
